While the current X3 is built by contract manufacturer Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, BMW is building the next generation in-house, moving assembly alongside the X5 and X6 in the company’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. The Z4 has been pulled from Spartanburg and is now made in Germany. The U.S. plant is currently gearing up to a total capacity of 200,000 units, all of them SUVs. The product mix will be flexible, but the X3 is expected to be the largest-volume model at about 100,000 units annually. Magna Steyr gets to build the crossover version of the Mini as compensation.

While today's sports sedan market is crowded with capable competitors, the standard by which other sports sedans are measured remains the car that almost single-handedly defined the segment: the BMW 3-Series.

Over the years, successive generations of the 3-Series have grown incrementally in size, sophistication and cost, but the early models are compact and mechanically simple, and can be a real bargain for the truly budget-minded sports sedan shopper.

The first-generation BMW 3-Series was the BMW 320i of 1977 to 1983 (the e21 body), a model that's now sufficiently old in years and technology to be considered a classic rather than a realistic daily driver. For those seeking a rock-bottom introduction into the 3-Series experience, the models to look for are the e30-bodied cars of 1984 to 1991.
Although boxy by today's standards, the e30 3-Series has clean, well-proportioned lines and remains a handsome car. It was offered in a whole range of variations such as two-door or four-door, 4- or 6-cylinder, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, sedan or convertible, and even a few "Touring" wagons. All were available with a 5-speed manual gearbox, or with a 3-speed automatic in the early four-cylinder cars and a 4-speed automatic in the 325/325e/325i and 318is. The all-wheel drive 325ix is fairly rare, but there were plenty of convertibles built (in typical BMW fashion the e30 convertible carried over into the 1992 model year). As an aside, BMW debuted the e30-bodied M3 in 1988, but this is somewhat of a collector car and commands a high price for its age - fun if you can afford it, but not necessarily a budget solution.
The 4-cylinder cars came in two distinct flavours: the 1984-85 BMW 318i was powered by the 101-horsepower 8-valve M10 engine, while the 1991 BMW 318is featured the much peppier 16-valve M42 mill, generating 134 horsepower. The early 4-cylinder cars are considered anemic and don't hold their value well, while the later engine provides a much higher fun quotient and a good 318is will reflect this in price.
The 6-cylinder cars were the most popular and retain their value better than 4-cylinder 3s, but to further confuse buyers the 6-cylinder cars themselves came in two variations: BMW 325i and the 325/325e. Both are based on BMW's silky-smooth M20 inline-6.

In the 325i it's a 167-horsepower, 2.5-litre powerplant with BMW's traditional free-revving character, putting maximum horsepower and torque (164 lb-ft) up near the redline. In the 325/325e it's a 121-horsepower, 2.7-litre "eta" engine, tuned for fuel efficiency with a longer stroke, lower redline and taller gearing. The eta engine didn't win many friends among BMW purists thanks to its low redline and modest horsepower, but with 170 lb-ft of torque available almost anywhere in the powerband it feels stronger than the numbers imply.
The car I drove for this review was a Cosmos Blue 1985 325 two-door with the 2.7-litre 6-cylinder eta engine, 5-speed manual transmission and 247,000 km showing on the odometer. The car came from the factory with a power sunroof, Recaro-style sport seats and cloth interior, alloy wheels, power door locks and power windows, but no air conditioning or on-board computer. It recently had new tires installed (195/60R14 Bridgestone Potenza G009 all-seasons), and service records indicated that the major suspension bushings, shocks, steering rack and timing chain had all been replaced within the past five years.
Whatever e30 you choose, one thing you'll get (provided the suspension is all in order) is BMW's excellent driving dynamics. The BMW e30 was ahead of its time in this regard, and despite its age my tester exhibited crisp steering and nice balance (thanks to a near 50/50 weight distribution), maintaining its composure even while cornering on uneven surfaces. The ride, in typical BMW style, was firm but forgiving, with nary a hint of harshness on sharp bumps and expansion joints. Where the suspension did show its age is in body roll - during spirited cornering the BMW 325 offered decent grip, but I found it leaned considerably more than modern sports sedans.
Pushed to the limits, the BMW 325 behaved predictably, with just a hint of initial understeer before all four tires started losing grip. Without any electronic nannies, tossing the car around in the wet will bring the tail out easily enough, but it doesn't snap round quite like earlier BMWs used to - instead it can be easily gathered back in or, by feathering the throttle, settled into a controlled power slide.
Even in eta form, the tester's 6-cylinder engine exhibited BMW's characteristic silky growl, and I found myself opening the windows just to hear it winding up. Unfortunately you only get to wind the BMW 325 up to 5,000 rpm before the rev limiter kicks in. That said, if you ignore the numbers on the tach, it's hard to tell you're in an eta car during normal around-town driving. Indeed, thanks to its big flat torque curve, the eta BMW 325 actually felt more powerful in stop-and-go traffic than a BMW 325i convertible I drove for comparison. To keep the BMW 325i's power on tap you have to keep its engine revved up, while the eta engine has grunt all the way down to idle. Where you do notice the eta's modest horsepower is attacking steep grades at speed - when running the BMW 325 up the steeper grades of BC's Coquihalla Highway there's a moment of surprise as your foot hits the floor mat and you wonder what happened to the seemingly endless reserve of power.
While the e30 3-Series is a relatively simple and rugged design, there are a few known weaknesses and wear points to look out for when buying one. First, the instruments can conk out thanks to the design of the service interval indicator, and this can be expensive to fix. Next, the interior fittings are not as robust as they could be, especially the seat cloth, and older cars should be checked for rust. Mechanically, look and listen for a loose cooling fan clutch, and check the boots at the ends of the power steering rack. If they are filled with fluid and leaking, it indicates a worn rack, which can cost $1,500 to replace. One trick BMW uses to give their cars a smooth ride is to isolate the suspension components with rubber bushings, but these can deteriorate. Check the main bushings securing the rear subframe - they are often worn out, which creates slop in the suspension and costs about $500 to fix. Finally, if you're looking at a 6-cylinder car, find out when the timing belt was last replaced. It needs to be done every four years or 100,000 km, and if it breaks it will cause major engine damage.
BMW's e30 3-Series continues to represent good overall value, and there are still plenty of examples available very inexpensively (though beware of cars needing major work, as the cost of repairs can quickly outstrip the value of the car). For the best value, look for a later model car in good original condition with a solid maintenance history. Apart from the specialty BMW M3, the 1988-onward BMW 325is (s stands for "sport") is the most desirable BMW e30 3-Series, and one in good condition should provide driving pleasure and performance far in excess of its price.

I'm just about to sell my beloved 1998 BMW 318i e36 sedan but not sure of how much its actually worth.

The car is very unique with an BMW m3 body kit all round, BMW m3 wheels and only 43,000kms on the clock. the paint is in pristine condition and car is like new inside and out.

I have visited a bmw showroom where they offered me an insaulting AU$6000.

I couldnt believe this figure and just wanted to get some other opinions

3 Series - e36 (1990 - 1999)

All as 4 door sedan versions.The 6 cylinder versions all had a new 24-valve 6-cylinder engine (M50/M51/M52), at that time available in the e34 5 series.In 1991 the 325td was introduced, and had a 6 cylinder engine with 115HP,later, in 1993, an intercooler was added to the engine and the 325tds was born.

The coupés were added from 1992, these sporty new 3 series blew away the competition with their smooth design and powerfull engines.The 318is, 320i and 325i coupé were available first. The 318is with it's M42 engine was a real high-rev sporty car and has 140HP,and had a nice sports-package available, preparing the audience for the BMW M3.

The M3 cabriolet was never officially offered for sale in North America; it was offered only for the European market.
The BMW M3 was first introduced on the E30 platform. A widened version of the E30 front suspension and the drivetrain from the E30 325i were used in the BMW Z1 roadster.

The BMW 7-series


When the F01 was launched in 2008, there were three engine options, of which Malaysia only got two. Not unexpectedly, BMW Malaysia left out the 730d, choosing only to bring in the 740Li and 750Li. The 730d that we missed out on is powered by the 2,993cc N57D30 turbodiesel producing 245hp @ 4,000rpm and a delicious-sounding 540Nm @ 1,750-3,000rpm (i.e. all the time!). Besides featuring BMW’s now oft-trumpeted array EfficientDynamics goodies, the 730d can now be optioned with BluePerformance Technology, which slashes nitric oxide emissions to Euro 6 levels, due for implementation in 2014.
BMW also cleverly took the same N57 engine, slapped it with what they call TwinPower Turbo Technology (that’s how BMW call twinturbos these days), and came up with the 740d. The idea is simple, but the results are astonishing. Peak power is rated at 306hp, but max torque is a phenomenal 600Nm available between 1,500rpm and 2,500rpm. Put it simply, a mere twitch of your right foot sends enough torque to the rear wheels to twist the earth spinning the opposite direction. As a result, the two-tonne-plus 740d needs only 6.3 seconds to hit 100kph, with its top speed artificially limited to 250kph. Claimed FC is a highly respectable 6.9 litres/100km.

For the first time ever, BMW is making its xDrive electronic all-wheel drive system available in the 7-series. As of now, it would only be mated to the 4.4-litre V8 in the 750i xDrive and the 750Li xDrive. In the 750, the xDrive is set-up with a 60:40 rear-biased torque split, but the system re-routes up to 80% of drive to the rear wheels during cornering, a move that BMW claims to “ensure spontaneous steering behaviour precisely following the actual radius and course of the bend.”

Together with the 6.0-litre V12-powered 760i, these new variants have doubled the powertrain options for the BMW 7-series since its launch, all of which can now be specified with the M Sports Package available on the BMW 7-series for the first time. Unlike the M Sport Packages found in the 3 and the 5, which dress the respective cars up in understated aggression, the one designed for the 7 shouts it out with extra ‘bling-bling’ in the form of chrome-finish on the front and rear diffusers. Chrome finish in a sports kit? What were they thinking?

Other cosmetic touches with the M Sports Package is the optional exclusive Carbon Black Metallic paint, and 19″ alloys (20″ optional). The interior gets all the usual M-badged steerings, gearknobs and whatnots. Under the skin enhancements come in the form of electronics, which is the BMW Dynamic Drive system.

The BMW 1-series


For the BMW 1-series, 2010 model year will feature the addition of two new entry level models for the coupe, and two special edition models for the hatch. This is in addition to the 116i and 116d hatches launched in Spring 2009. Both new variants of the coupe feature two-litre inline-4 engines, but consume different fuels. The petrol-powered BMW 120i gets the N43B20 engine which produces 170hp @ 6,700rpm and 210Nm @ 4,250rpm. Equipped with High Precision Injection (BMW-speak for direct injection), this 1,995cc motor is claimed to sip only 6.6 litres/100km when mounted in the BMW 1-series coupe.
The N47D20 of the 118i similarly displaces 1,995cc, but produce far more impressive figures than the BMW 120i. Power is rated at 143hp @ 4,000rpm, but like all diesels, the figure to watch out for is the torque, and the 118d generates 300Nm in that useful range of 1,750 to 2,500rpm. This allows the 118d to dispatch the century sprint at nine seconds flat before maxing out at 210kph. While that sounds pretty average in today’s terms, its claimed FC of 4.5 litres/100km is less than what even Kancil drivers are accustomed to.
To help both the BMW 120i and 118d meet the stringent Euro 5 emission standards, BMW has equipped both of them with various EfficientDynamics technlogies such as brake energy regeneration, auto start/stop, gear shift point indicators and on-demand only activation of ancillary units as standard. These goodies are also fitted in the 116d hatch, allowing it to achieve an impressive 4.4 litres/100km fuel consumption figure in the EU test cycle. Not to be confused by the badge, the 116d actually draws its propulsion from a two-litre engine, as does the 116i.
Two new special editions for the hatch has also been introduced, namely the Lifestyle Edition and Sport Edition Model. Both these trim levels can be specified for all engine options available on the hatch. The Lifestyle Edition comes in an exclusive Marrakesh Brown Metallic paint complemented with a matching colour scheme for the interior. Additional goodies for this edition includes 17″ lightweight alloys, chrome tails, multifunction leather sports steering wheel, and anthracite-colour roof lining.

Where the Lifestyle Edition consists primarily of cosmetic enchancements, the Sport Edition Model comes with a full M Sports Package which includes the M Aerodynamics Package and a sports suspension setup. Seventeen-inch alloys come as standard, but buyers of the BMW 123d and BMW 130i can opt for 18″ lightweight rims finished in Ferric Grey colour. The M touch continues inside with the footrest, the sports steering wheel, and the gear shift lever all bearing the magical logo. To complete the sporty tone, the dashboard is finished in the funkily named Aluminium Glacier Silver.
Finally, for the 2010 model year, the BMW 1-series will feature the new generation iDrive featuring an 800 × 480 pixel LCD screen, and can be optionally packaged together with BMW’s Business navigation system.

Overview of BMW’s 2010 Model Year: 1-series & 7-series

BMW has recently announced refreshed line-ups for the new BMW 1-series and BMW 7-series for the 2010 model year. Two new models have been added for the 1-series coupe - one petrol (120i) and one diesel (118d), with the hatch getting two new special edition models. Both these new entry level models to the BMW 1-series coupe range get the full range of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, allowing them to comfortably fulfill Euro 5 emission standards.
Meanwhile, at the top end of BMW’s model spectrum, the BMW 7-series gets a new variant, which is the 740d twin-turbodiesel. In addition, their famous xDrive AWD system is now available in the 750, in the form of the 750i xDrive and the 750Li xDrive. The 730d can now be opted with BMW BluePerformance Technology, an enhancement that brings the 730d into Euro 6 emission compliance.

2009 BMW 328 i 2dr Rear-wheel Drive Convertible Overview


The BMW 328i delivers a special mix of sporting performance, practicality and European luxury in a compact package. It's the car that defines 'sport sedan,' and the benchmark every luxury car maker from Acura to Volvo aims at when it develops an entry-level luxury sport sedan.
The rear-wheel drive BMW 328i is available in coupe, sedan, wagon and convertible bodies, while the all-wheel drive BMW 328i xDrive is available in coupe, sedan and wagon only. Power is provided by a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that puts out 230 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on all variations, with a six-speed automatic transmission optional. Standard safety features include six airbags, four wheel ABS disc brakes with adaptive brakelights, traction and stability control, as well as pop-up roll-over protection on the convertible.
