BMW 318 Information

The BMW 318 is part of the 3 Series BMW that debuted in 1975. The 3 Series has become the most successful series of any in the BMW line. These cars were compact, sporty and continued the long tradition of innovative technology and forward-thinking body design. The 3 Series debuted just two years after the 1973 fuel shortages, and BMW responded with a fuel-efficient car capable of high performance.

Models

The BMW 318 and the rest of the 3 Series were offered in a two-door coupe, the 2-door convertible, the 4-sedan and the 5-door family tourer. A 3-door hatchback introduced in 1995 had a truncated rear and was marketed to younger buyers. It didn't attract much attention and was discontinued in 1999.

The BMW 318 Designation

The BMW 318 was in the middle range of the 3 Series. The number "3" identified it as a 3 Series model, while "18" for the 1.8-liter, 4-cylinder engine. The BMW 318's 1.8-liter motor generated 98 horsepower, which at the time bordered close to the performance luxury class, although it ran on non-premium fuel.
